Tallawarra B is EnergyAustralia’s 320 MW open cycle gas turbine, designed to operate on a blend of natural gas and hydrogen, making it Australia’s first hydrogen ready power station. DIS Fire Systems was engaged to design and supply the fire protection package for the critical electrical and switchroom modules, ensuring safe operation under hydrogen enriched conditions.

The Challenge

Ensuring safety for hydrogen-ready gas turbines amidst changing standards.

The Tallawarra B development required a fire protection solution that could operate reliably in a mixed hydrogen and natural gas environment and interface with EnergyAustralia’s plant wide SCADA system. The key challenge was achieving fast, sensitive detection in enclosed switchrooms with high air change rates. DIS Fire Systems developed a layered solution combining VESDA aspirating early warning detection with addressable photo optical detectors, and intrinsically safe devices in hazardous classified zones. Aspirating pipe networks were modelled in ASPIRE to verify transport times and sampling performance under these high airflow conditions.

Our Approach

Integrated design and delivery of fire detection and IG-541 suppression systems.

DIS Fire Systems delivered the Tallawarra B scope under a design-and-supply contract with Mayfield Industries, including detailed calculation packs, as-built drawings, and certified equipment for use in hydrogen service areas

The Result

Hydrogen-ready fire system commissioned and operational for EnergyAustralia’s Tallawarra B plant.

The completed system provides layered protection through VESDA early-warning detection, IG-541 clean-agent discharge, and hydrogen-gas monitoring across two critical switchrooms. All equipment was delivered and verified within EnergyAustralia’s startup program, supporting the plant’s successful commissioning in 2023 as Australia’s first hydrogen-capable gas turbine facility
